Who Am I in Christ? – “Secure”
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose – Romans 8:28
Because of the unpredictability of life, we could occasionally experience feelings of insecurity, anxiety, and even fear. We live in a world that is fraught with disorder, adversity, and uncertainty, and it is not unusual to experience feelings of being unable to cope with all of it. Yet, as followers of Christ, we have a rock-solid foundation in Him on which we can always rely, no matter what our lives throw at us. We find our safety in him.
This is true regardless of what challenges we face. As a guide, we will use Romans 8:28 together with verses 31–38 to help us gain a deeper understanding of what it means to find our safety in Him.
Maria’s struggles with doubt
Maria is a young Christian woman who has been battling with emotions of uneasiness and doubt as of late. She was laid off not too long ago, and the prospect of not knowing what the future holds has weighed heavily on her mind. She has been having difficult thoughts like, “What if I never find another job?” and “How will I pay my bills?” She has been fighting with these thoughts. She has been experiencing worry and a sense of uncertainty about her future as a direct result of these thoughts.
God is in complete control and loves us eternally.
Romans 8:28 says that “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This chapter serves to remind us that no matter what is going on in our lives, God is working everything out for the best in his plans for us. Even in the midst of unpredictability, we are able to have faith that God has a plan for each of our lives and that He is in complete control.
Romans 8:31–38 also serves to remind us of the love that God has for us as well as the safety that we have in Him. It is written in verses 38 and 39, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all of creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Both of these passages should give us great comfort in God’s absolute sovereignty, infinite wisdom, perpetual presence, and perfect love. In God, we are completely secure. We find our safety in him.
God’s great faithfulness and our eternal security
Thomas Chisholm wrote the song “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” which is a Christian hymn that speaks of God’s faithfulness and the security that can be found in Him. The words serve as a reminder that God is trustworthy at all times, even in the face of unpredictability and difficulties. The following is a selection of the lyrics:
“Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
We find our safety in him.
As disciples of Christ, we have a stable basis in Him on which we may always rely, regardless of what may occur in our lives. We can have faith that God is working everything out for our good and that He will never leave us or forsake us, even in the midst of ambiguity or testing that we must endure.
Knowing that nothing can ever separate us from the love of God that is found in Jesus Christ, our Lord, can be a source of great solace and peace for us. We find our safety in him.
I pray that we have the strength to cling to this reality and the faith to put our trust in the stability and reliability of God no matter what.
