From Reaction to Reflection: Master Your Emotions
A Free Preview From Our Lessons for Life Community. Our latest lesson will explore why you react the way you do in certain situations, providing insights for personal growth.
Understanding our emotions is one of the most important skills we can develop for spiritual growth, relational health, and personal maturity. Yet many believers live at the mercy of emotional reactivity, not realizing that there is a biblical way to think, interpret, and respond with wisdom and clarity.
Inside the Lessons for Life Community, we meet each month for a Monthly Deep Dive where we explore one essential topic for emotional, relational, or spiritual transformation. These sessions are normally for community members only, but today I want to give you a free preview of one of our most foundational teachings.

A One-Minute Insight That Changes Everything: Understanding Why You React
Before diving into the full article, watch this short clip.
It contains one of the most important insights I teach about emotions.
Most people believe events cause their emotions. This one-minute insight reveals the truth, and it changes everything.
🎥 Watch the Clip: “Beyond Events: How Interpretation Shapes Our Emotional Responses.”
What You Just Saw
That one-minute clip reveals a biblical and relationally wise framework:
Event + Interpretation = Response
The event may trigger an emotion, but it is your interpretation of the event that determines your emotional response, the words you speak, and the actions you take. This is one of the most freeing truths for emotional growth.
This is just a brief portion of the full deep dive, where we unpack:
- Why emotions feel so powerful
- How sin distorts our interpretations
- How emotional flooding works
- How to reverse emotional spirals
- How to start responding instead of reacting
Inside the Lessons for Life Community, you receive the full teaching along with worksheets, tools, and ongoing coaching to help you apply it.

Understanding the Purpose of Emotions and Why You React
God designed emotions to move us toward action.
They are not the enemy; they are indicators. They reveal desires, beliefs, fears, and interpretations happening beneath the surface.
Because we live in a broken world, our interpretations are often distorted:
- We assume motives.
- We misread situations.
- We fill in gaps with fear, shame, or insecurity.
- We react before seeking clarity.
That is why the framework in the clip is so powerful.
It reorients us to think biblically:
It’s not the event alone; it’s our interpretation of the event.
Once you begin to understand this, your emotional life becomes more manageable, more understandable, and more open to transformation.
The READ Framework for Emotional Clarity
Inside the deep dive, we explored a simple tool to help redirect your emotional responses:
R — Recognize your emotions
E — Evaluate their source
A — Anticipate the consequences
D — Direct them in a godly way
This is one of the core emotional wisdom tools I use in counseling, coaching, and discipleship.
Reflection Exercises You Can Use This Week
Here are a few exercises taken directly from our community resources:
1. Identify a Recent Emotional Trigger
Write down:
- What happened
- What you felt
- How intense it was
- What interpretation did you assume
- Whether your interpretation was true or assumed
2. The Dashboard Light Exercise
Think of your emotion as a dashboard light.
Ask:
- What is this feeling pointing to underneath?
- What belief or fear is fueling it?
- What Scripture speaks truth to it?
3. Practice the READ Framework
Take one current relational or emotional struggle and work through Recognize, Evaluate, Anticipate, Direct.
4. Sit With Psalm 73:21–26
What truth redirected the psalmist’s emotions?
How might it redirect yours?
