Who am I in Christ? “Chosen by God”: A devotional on being chosen by God

The concept of being chosen is one that is deeply ingrained in our human experience. Whether it’s by a boyfriend or girlfriend, a friend group, or a company for a job opportunity. We all want to feel like we were picked. Yet, because we are Christians, we are able to discover the ultimate satisfaction in knowing that we have been chosen by God. In this devotional, we are going to talk about what that means and how the knowledge of this fact can change our lives.

Case in point: Being chosen by God helped Sarah find peace.

Sally was raised in a Christian household and was a devout churchgoer throughout her childhood. On the other hand, as she got older, she started to battle with the idea that she wasn’t living up to the expectations of others, especially the community that she was a part of in her church. She had the idea that she couldn’t possibly be a “genuine” Christian since she lacked certain qualities. She frequently found herself trying to get other people’s approval.

One day, Sally came across Ephesians 1:4, which says, “even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.” As she reflected on this verse, she began to understand that her worth and identity were not dependent on her performance or the approval of others. Rather it was based on the fact that she was chosen by God. She realized that her worth and identity were based on the fact that she had been chosen by God.

As a result of Sally’s coming to this revelation, she was able to feel a fresh sense of liberty and joy in her connection with God. She no longer had the impression that she needed to do something to win His affection or the favor of others; rather, she was able to take comfort in the knowledge that she was loved and accepted by Him. This reality shifted her perspective, and as a result, she was able to lead a life of confident obedience to God, secure in the knowledge that she had been selected by Him for a specific reason.

How does Scripture answer Sally’s struggles?

Romans 8:30 says, “And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.” This verse emphasizes that God has a plan for those who believe in Him. From before the foundation of the world, He chose us to be part of His family and to share in His glory.

Ephesians 1:4 and 11 both speak to the idea of being chosen. Verse 4 says, “even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.” And verse 11 says, “In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will.” These verses emphasize that being chosen is not something that we earn or achieve, but rather it is a gift of grace that God has given us.

1 Peter 2:9 says, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” This verse reminds us that being chosen by God is not just for our own benefit but also for His purposes. We have been chosen to proclaim His excellencies and to be a part of His work in the world.

Bringing it Home: Chosen by God.

In the devotional on being chosen by God, we can get a great deal of solace and confidence in our status as God’s children when we consider that we are the ones whom God has specifically selected.

This reality serves as a reminder that we are not abandoned or forgotten but rather that we have been specifically selected by a loving Father. Neither one of these things is true. Let us live our lives with the assurance and a sense of purpose that comes from knowing that God has specifically chosen us.
