1 Peter 2:9-10 – “Remember Who You Are” – Our Identity and Purpose

Peter wrote to a group of believers that were under tremendous persecution and distress. He wanted to encourage them in their faith by speaking of their position in Christ. He wanted to remind them there who they were and why they existed.

- Christ is the living Stone
- Chosen and Precious Redeemer
- We are living stones (spiritual temple where the Holy Spirit resides)
- Christ is the Cornerstone (Isaiah 28:16)
- Christ is the rejected One (Psalm 118:22)
- Christ is the crushing Stone (Isaiah 8:14)
- We are never ashamed. We are justified by grace, through faith, by Christ alone
“Remember Who You Are” – Our Identity and Purpose (1 Peter 2:9-10)
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

- Holy (separate/set apart people) – Positional sanctification versus Practical sanctification
- God’s possession (acquired at a price) (see also 1:18–19; cf. 1 Cor. 6:20; 7:23; Heb. 13:12; Rev. 5:9)
- God’s people (see Hosea 1:9-10)
- Receiver of mercy (see Hosea 1:6; 2:23)
- Why am I here?
- Proclaim His excellencies
- “We declare your majesty. We proclaim that your Name is exalted. For You reign magnificently, You rule victoriously and Your power is shown throughout the earth.”

- God did it all
- God called us
- Out of the negative – darkness
- Into the positive – light
