Reflecting on Our Motives Through Our Calendars
Our daily schedules and commitments often reveal much about our priorities and underlying motives. By examining how we allocate our time, we can gain insight into what truly matters to us.
Scripture References:
- Proverbs 16:2 (ESV): “All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirit.”
- Matthew 6:1 (ESV): “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.”
The Deceptiveness of Self-Perception:
Proverbs 16:2 warns, “All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirit.” We may believe our actions are pure and well-intentioned, but only God can accurately assess the true motives behind them.
The Danger of Seeking Human Approval:
In Matthew 6:1, Jesus cautions against performing righteous acts to be seen by others: “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them.” Our actions should be motivated by a desire to honor God, not to gain human approval.
Application:
- Evaluate Your Calendar: Review your daily and weekly schedules. What activities consume most of your time? Are they aligned with your values and God’s purposes?
- Assess Your Motives: Reflect on why you engage in certain activities. Are you seeking personal gain, recognition, or are you genuinely serving others and honoring God?
- Align Actions with Values: Ensure that your commitments reflect your core beliefs and priorities. Be willing to adjust your schedule to better align with God’s will.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help me to examine my heart and actions, revealing any motives that do not align with Your will. Guide me to live authentically, seeking to honor You in all I do. May my time and efforts reflect a heart devoted to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
