Identity in Christ: I am an Adopted Child of God

In Christ, we are not just saved from sin, but we are brought into God’s family as His beloved children. This adoption means that we have a new identity, a new relationship with our Heavenly Father, and a new inheritance. Understanding this incredible truth should fill us with awe, gratitude, and confidence in our relationship with God.

Scripture: Ephesians 1:5

Ephesians 1:5 (ESV): “In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.”

Devotional Thought: Adopted by God

Adoption is one of the greatest blessings of the Christian life. Through Jesus Christ, we are not just forgiven, but we are brought into God’s family as His sons and daughters. This means that we are loved with the same love that God has for His only-begotten Son.

In the ancient world, adoption often involved a wealthy man adopting a young adult male to carry on his name and inherit his estate. But God, in His great mercy, adopts people of all backgrounds, regardless of our pasts. He brings us into His family, not because of anything good in us, but because of His incredible love and grace.

As adopted children, we now have access to God as our Father. We can come to Him in prayer, trusting that He cares for us, provides for us, and protects us. And as His children, we also share in the inheritance of Christ—eternal life, glory, and an intimate relationship with our Father that begins now and lasts forever.

Bringing it Home: Applying What We Learned

  • Live Confidently in Your Identity: Remember that you are God’s beloved child, adopted into His family. Let this truth shape your sense of worth and purpose.
  • Trust in God’s Fatherly Care: As God’s child, you can trust that He knows your needs and will provide for you. Bring your concerns to Him in prayer with confidence.
  • Imitate Your Heavenly Father: Strive to live in a way that reflects God’s love and grace, just as He has shown them to you.

Prayer

Father, thank You for adopting me as Your child. Help me to live in the confidence of knowing that I am loved by You. Teach me to trust in Your care and to reflect Your character in my daily life. Amen.

Questions for Reflection (How to Live as an Adopted Child of God)

  • How does knowing you are adopted by God change your perspective on your worth and purpose?
  • In what areas of your life do you need to trust God’s fatherly care more?
  • How can you imitate God’s love and grace in your daily interactions?

By embracing our identity in Christ and living out these truths, we can experience the joy, peace, and freedom that come from being part of God’s family.
