Identity in Christ: I am a Saint

As believers, one of the greatest truths we can embrace is that, in Christ, we are called saints. This is not due to any righteousness of our own but because of the righteousness of Jesus Christ imputed to us. In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul prays for the eyes of our hearts to be enlightened so that we may grasp this incredible reality. We are God’s treasured possession, and His power at work within us is greater than we could ever imagine.

Scripture: Ephesians 1:18

“Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.”

Devotional Thought: I am a Saint

To be called a saint means that we are set apart for God, not by our own merit, but because of Christ’s finished work on the cross. When Paul prays for the believers in Ephesus, he asks that their spiritual eyes be opened to understand the depth of what God has done for them. This includes grasping the hope to which they are called and the immeasurable power available to them as believers.

God sees His people as a glorious inheritance, something He looks forward to enjoying forever. That’s how valuable you are to Him. As a saint, you are not just saved from sin; you are brought into a relationship with God where His power works through you. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work in you, giving you the strength to live for Him and overcome sin.

Understanding your identity as a saint also changes the way you live. When you realize how much God values you, it compels you to live a life worthy of that calling. You are empowered to walk in holiness, not out of obligation but out of a deep gratitude for all that God has done.

Bringing it Home: Applying What We Learned

  • Embrace Your Identity: Remember that being a saint is not based on your own works but on Christ’s righteousness. Walk confidently in the truth that you are set apart for God.
  • Pray for Spiritual Insight: Ask God to open the eyes of your heart so that you can truly comprehend the depth of the hope, inheritance, and power that are yours in Christ.
  • Live a Life Worthy of Your Calling: As you understand more fully who you are in Christ, let that truth motivate you to live in a way that reflects your identity as a saint, striving for holiness in all areas of life.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me a saint and setting me apart for Your purposes. Open the eyes of my heart so that I may truly understand the hope I have in You, the richness of being Your treasured possession, and the power that is at work within me. Help me to live each day in light of this truth and to reflect Your holiness in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
