Biblical Strategies for Dealing With Depression During the Holidays

The holiday season can bring joy and happiness for many people, but for those dealing with depression, it can be an incredibly difficult time of year. With the hustle and bustle of the season seemingly everywhere, it can be hard to find a moment of peace when dealing with depression.

Symptoms of Depression

Symptoms of depression can include:

  • Feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and/or emptiness
  • Loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable
  • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Low energy or fatigue
  • Feelings of worthlessness and guilt
  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions
  • Unexplained aches and pains
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
  • Irritability or restlessness.

Three Biblical Strategies to Deal with Depression

Thankfully, the Bible offers us advice on how to manage depressive symptoms during this time while also providing comfort and hope.

One powerful strategy mentioned in Psalm 34:18 is to “draw near to God.” Whether through prayer or meditation, spending quality time with our Creator can provide us with much-needed solace during times of distress. Making room in our schedule to spend even 10 minutes alone each day to just sit in His presence will make a huge difference in our mood and spirit!

Another piece of advice found in Colossians 3:2 is to “set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” Focusing on the positive rather than dwelling on negative thoughts will help reduce feelings of despair during difficult moments. Taking part in activities that bring us joy can also be incredibly beneficial for managing depression (Philippians 4:8). It could be something simple like cooking a meal or playing music – anything that helps lift our moods and brings us pleasure is worth exploring!

Finally, Hebrews 13:5 reminds us that we should “never forget God’s mercy” even when it feels like we are going through the darkness alone.

Some Additional Biblical Passages to Consider

  • Do activities that bring joy – Philippians 4:8
  • Rely on God’s mercy – Hebrews 13:5
  • Know that sadness is normal – Isaiah 61:3
  • Offer comfort to others – 1 Thessalonians 4:13
  • Be grace-oriented – Romans 5:5
  • Believe (truly put your confidence) in God and Jesus – John 14:1
  • Seek help from counselors, friends, or family – James 5:16
  • Find purpose in life’s trials – Job 5:17.

Let’s Get Even More Practical

  • Commit to delight in Christ alone – break down all the idols (2 Kings 22:8-23:27).
  • Remember that God is with you always.
  • Mediate on the Word day and night (Psalm 1:2-3; 19:8; Jeremiah 15:16; Matthew 4:4; John 17:17; Romans 10:17; 15:4)
  • Read the Word focusing on the centrality of God, and see Christ in all the Word.
  • Grow in the fear of the Lord
  • Preach the Gospel to yourself (Psalm 42:11)
  • Pray for Joy continually and earnestly (IOUs)
    • I – Incline my heart (Psalm 119:36)
    • O – Open my eyes (Psalm 119:18)
    • U – Unite my heart to fear your name (Psalm 86:11)
    • S – Satisfy me (Psalm 90:14) – ask God for satisfaction.
  • Resolve to fight every known sin in your life
  • Share your faith
  • Spend time with God-saturated people
  • Read biographies of great saints (Hebrews 11:4)
  • Read great books about God (theology/doctrine)
  • Get the rest, nourishment, and exercise that God designed you to have
  • Minister to the needy (Isaiah 58:10-11)
  • Get a global vision for the cause of Christ (unreached people, www.persecution.org)
  • Be patient in the seeming absence of God in the dark nights of your soul (Psalm 40:1-3)
