“Counseling through the Word” Devotional: An Angry Person is Dangerous
Anger is a powerful emotion that can lead to great harm if it is not controlled. The Bible frequently speaks of the importance of self-control, especially in relation to our passions and emotions. Proverbs 25:28 uses the vivid image of a city without walls to describe the vulnerability of a person who lacks self-control. Just as a city without walls is exposed to attack and destruction, so too is a person who does not exercise control over their anger, desires, or impulses.
Scripture: Proverbs 25:28
“A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”
Devotional Thought: An Angry Person is Dangerous
The Bible gives us clear wisdom on the danger of uncontrolled anger. Proverbs 25:28 compares a person without self-control to a city that has no defense—completely exposed and vulnerable to attack.
In ancient times, the walls of a city were its first line of defense, protecting it from external threats. Without walls, the city could be easily overrun, plundered, and destroyed. Similarly, when we lack control over our emotions, particularly anger, we leave ourselves vulnerable to harmful consequences.
Anger is not always sinful; Jesus Himself displayed righteous anger. However, when anger is not dealt with in a godly manner, it becomes destructive. It can lead to broken relationships, lost opportunities, and deep regret.
Self-control, on the other hand, is a mark of wisdom and maturity. It allows us to handle conflicts, disappointments, and frustrations in a way that honors God and protects us from the devastation that unchecked anger can bring.
If you struggle with anger, take heart—God provides us with His Holy Spirit, who empowers us to grow in self-control. Through prayer, Scripture, and relying on God’s strength, we can learn to control our emotions and respond in ways that build up rather than tear down.
Bringing it Home: Applying What We Learned
- Guard Your Heart: Just as a city needs walls for protection, you need self-control to guard your heart and mind from the destructive power of anger.
- Seek God’s Help: Pray for the Holy Spirit to help you grow in self-control and to respond to frustrations in a way that honors God.
- Resolve Conflicts with Grace: When anger arises, focus on addressing problems, not attacking people. Approach conflicts with a heart of reconciliation and peace.
Prayer
Lord, help me to control my anger and emotions. I recognize that without self-control, I am vulnerable to making decisions that dishonor You and hurt others. Teach me to rely on Your Holy Spirit for strength to handle difficult situations with grace and patience. Help me to resolve conflicts in a way that brings peace and glorifies Your name. Amen.
