“Counseling through the Word” Devotional: I am a Holy Temple

Scripture: Ephesians 2:21 (ESV) – “In whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.”

As a believer in Christ, you are part of something greater than yourself. You are not only an individual follower of Jesus but also a vital piece of God’s larger plan—a living stone in the holy temple of God. This temple is not built with physical bricks and mortar but with the lives of those who belong to Christ. Together, we form the dwelling place of God, where His Spirit resides.

Devotional Thought

In the Old Testament, the temple was a physical structure where God’s presence dwelled. It was a place of worship, prayer, and sacrifice. But through Jesus Christ, the significance of the temple has shifted. No longer do we need to go to a specific location to encounter God. Instead, God dwells within us—His people. As believers, we collectively become the temple of God, joined together in Christ.

This truth carries profound implications for how we live our lives. First, it reminds us that we are never alone in our faith journey. We are connected to other believers, forming a spiritual family that grows together in the Lord. Second, it challenges us to live in a way that reflects the holiness of the God who dwells within us. As a holy temple, our lives should be characterized by purity, love, and devotion to God.

Being part of God’s temple also emphasizes the importance of community. Belonging to the visible church is not optional for followers of Christ. We are called to gather together, worship together, and support one another as we grow in faith. In this holy temple, God meets with His people in joyful worship and fellowship, and He continues to build and expand His church until all who will believe are brought in.

Bringing it Home: Applying What We Learned

  • Embrace Your Role: Reflect on your place within God’s holy temple. How can you contribute to the growth and unity of the church?
  • Pursue Holiness: As a dwelling place for God’s Spirit, commit to living a life that reflects His holiness and love.
  • Value Community: Stay connected to your church community, recognizing that you are part of something much bigger than yourself.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for making me a part of Your holy temple. Help me to live in a way that honors You and strengthens the community of believers. May Your Spirit dwell richly in me, guiding me in holiness and love. Amen.
