How do you handle it when sinful people do wicked things? How do you respond when it seems like everyone around you is attacking you? Do you ever feel like people around you are plotting and planning ways to hurt and harm you?
It’s interesting that when God created humanity in His own image, part of that image was that we have the ability to think and invent. But what happens when humanity takes the mind and heart that God has given them and uses it to invent ways of evil or to strategize to do wicked things?
We live in a world that is full of evil. There are many enemies around every corner. This psalm speaks of the enemies as secretly plotting, strategizing, scheming, suddenly attacking, all because of their perceived self-importance. In addition, they have taken the gift of words and speech and turned them into weapons of hurt and harm.
Do you know someone like that? Has this ever happened to you? How do you tend to respond when it seems that your perpetrators are out to get you?
In this psalm, we learn how David deals with these problems. He prays. He brings his complaint and concerns to God. We would be wise to do the same. He also spends a significant time describing his fears to God. Even though God is all-knowing and all-wise, David specifically lays out his concerns and the problems that he is encountering. Once again that is wise counsel to us. Finally, David reminds himself of what the Almighty God could do. We see the sovereign God out-strategizes the wicked people and their evil plans and suddenly turns on them.
David was able to find his security in God’s power and justice. He knew that in God, he had a sure and certain refuge. As a result, he rejoiced in God as the only remedy for his fears.
