Counseling through the Word: I am a Citizen of Heaven

Verse: “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” – Philippians 3:20 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

In Philippians 3:20, Paul reminds the believers in Philippi that their true citizenship is not of this world, but in heaven. This was a powerful message, especially for the Philippians, who prided themselves on their Roman citizenship. Yet, Paul shifts their focus from earthly privileges to a far greater reality—they belong to a heavenly kingdom.

The Greek term for “citizenship” (politeuma) here emphasizes that believers are part of a colony of heaven. Although we live physically on earth, our identity, allegiance, and eternal privileges are rooted in heaven, where Christ reigns. This heavenly citizenship means that our values, actions, and hope should reflect our eternal home, not the fleeting and often corrupt systems of this world.

As citizens of heaven, we eagerly await the return of our Savior, Jesus Christ. This anticipation shapes how we live each day. We are called to look beyond the immediate and temporary, to set our minds on the eternal. Our hope lies not in the promises of this world but in the glorious future that awaits us when Christ returns to transform our lowly bodies into His glorious likeness.

For those struggling with the hardships of life, this truth brings comfort and perspective. The trials of this world are temporary, and our true home is with Christ, where all pain, suffering, and sin will be eradicated. We are not defined by our current circumstances but by our eternal destination.

Bringing It Home: Application Points

  • Live with an Eternal Perspective: Remember that your true home is in heaven, and let this reality influence your daily decisions and attitudes.
  • Find Comfort in Christ’s Return: When faced with difficulties, anchor your hope in the promise of Christ’s return and the transformation that awaits.
  • Align Your Life with Heavenly Values: As a citizen of heaven, strive to reflect the values of God’s kingdom in all that you do.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that my citizenship is in heaven. Help me to live each day with an eternal perspective, eagerly awaiting the return of my Savior, Jesus Christ. May my life reflect the values of Your kingdom, and may I find comfort in the promise of the glory to come. Amen.

Questions for Reflection

This week, challenge yourself to live with an eternal perspective. Reflect on these questions:

1. How can I remind myself daily that my true citizenship is in heaven?

2. In what ways can I find comfort in the promise of Christ’s return during difficult times?

3. How can I align my actions and decisions with the values of God’s kingdom?

By focusing on these questions, you can begin to transform your perspective and live a life that reflects your true identity as a citizen of heaven.
