Does it feel like your world is collapsing?

As you go through this time, does it feel like the earth is shaking? The mountains are uprooted? The oceans are quaking?

You are not alone.

So many things we took for granted have now become so uncertain. Perhaps you are struggling with fear, insecurity, doubt, discontentment, or despair.

Let us spend some time studying the very Psalm that was the foundation for the hymn A Mighty Fortress is Our God.

Open your Bible, and turn with me to Psalm 46 and listen as we work through this passage together.

God Is For Us and He Alone Is Our Refuge (Psalm 46:1-3)

  1. Affirmation  of Faith: “God Is” (Psalm 46:1)
    • Changeless character
      • Absolutely Sovereign
      • Infinitely Wise
      • Perfectly Loving 
  2. Arguments for Faith: “God is…” (Psalm 46:1)
    • “Refuge”
    • “Strength”
    • “Very Present Help”
  3. Application of Faith: “Therefore,” I will not  fear (Psalm 46:2-3)
    • Great Upheaval – Cataclysmic events –  “Even if thinking”
      • The earth becomes  disordered 
      • The mountains become  dislodged 
      • The oceans become  disturbed 

God Is With Us (Psalm 46:4-7)

  1. God is preserving us (Psalm 46:4)
  2. God is present with us (Psalm 46:5a)
  3. God is providing for us in the perfect time (Psalm 46:5b)

God Will Fight For Us (Psalm 46:8-11)

  1. Two imperatives (Psalm 46:8)

Simple fear journal

Fear dominates so many people today. When people struggle with fear, they find themselves struggling to think clearly. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” Self-control could also be translated as a sound mind. It is a disciplined and self-controlled, and rightly prioritized mind. This simple journal will help you to write out your fears and biblically reframe your thinking and behaving to deal with your fears.

Gratitude journal

When was the last time someone said thank you to you? When was the last time you said thank you to someone else? So many people today struggle with a lack of thankfulness and ingratitude. This leads to struggles with complaining, criticizing, and comparing. Gratitude and thankfulness provide a powerful remedy for these problems. This gratitude journal helps us to identify what we should be grateful for and what we do as a result of seeing life as a gift.
