Have you noticed that every time a new superhero movie comes out it is an even bigger box office hit than the last one?
The recent release of the Marvel movie, AVENGERS: ENDGAME, is estimated to bring in $2 BILLION over the first weekend. Yes, that’s billion with a “B”.
That’s a lot of money and thankfully, by most reviewers, this is an excellent and relatively “safe” movie for families. (Though according to Michael Medved and World Magazine reviewer, Megan Basham, there is more swearing in this movie than most others in this series. You may want to consider leaving your younger children at home.)
Not a Review but Thought
Since I haven’t seen the movie yet, this is not a review, The reviews of others can easily be found. I’m just caught up in the thoughts of why this genre is so popular.
What is going on in the hearts and minds of people that resonates so deeply with movie goers? I think it’s this: we are all longing for something/Someone bigger than ourselves, a true hero who will rescue us from danger and win our hearts.
As Tim Keller often says, a good story is really just a retelling of the gospel.
In Whom Can we Truly Believe
We live in strange times these days in America. Everyone seems to be offended by something and words that cut and destroy flow freely in the media and from our elected officials.
Respect is waning on every front, traditional icons are being covered up or torn down, things we all once held dear are being challenged and at times we wonder who and what we can even trust.
Is there anyone out there we can believe in and trust? YES!!!
Someone Who Can Save The Day
As sad as it is to see, it really is a good thing to be longing for someone to come in and save the day, because honestly, Jesus was always the only real answer to our problems.
Because of this longing of the human heart, we are always going to be tempted to put our hope in trust in something other than the Lord.
For some, it is a political ideology or a politician. If only so and so was in office everything would be great. But that is a lie. Yes, there are great leaders and horrific leaders, but most are just average.
And at the end of the day, everyone is a fallen human being who is as broken as the people he or she rules over.
Only one man could ever really rescue humanity and He had to give up His life in order to do so. He was and is and always will be the only one who deserves our complete trust and devotion.
He is the Rescuer, the One who rides in on the white horse and saves the world!
The Real Superhero
So when you are watching this or any movie for that matter, and you find yourself rejoicing when the hero saves the day–know that this is exactly what your heart is longing for.
And only in Jesus Christ will it be totally and completely satisfied.
Question to Consider
To what or whom do people turn to be their superhero?
