Conflict as an Opportunity: Approaching Challenges with Humility
Conflict is often viewed as something to avoid, something that disrupts peace and harmony. Yet, in the Bible, we see that conflict is not necessarily a bad thing. When approached with the right heart, conflict can provide powerful opportunities for growth, connection, and transformation.
In Romans 8:28-29 (ESV), we are reminded that God can use all things, including conflict, for our good: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.”
God can use the stress and tension of conflict to shape us into the image of Christ. When we approach conflict with humility, trusting in God’s plan, we open the door for deeper connection with others and with God. Through conflict, we have the opportunity to glorify God, serve others, and grow to be more like Christ.
As we engage in conflict, the Bible encourages us to focus on three key opportunities:
- Glorifying God – Asking ourselves how we can honor God in the midst of the conflict, trusting, obeying, and imitating Christ (1 Cor. 10:31).
- Serving Others – Using conflict as a chance to bear one another’s burdens and offer loving correction (Gal. 6:2).
- Growing in Christlikeness – Confessing sin, letting go of sinful desires, and embracing God’s work of transformation in our hearts (James 4:1-3) (for more on this topic, please see The Peacemaker by Ken Sande).
Conflict is not merely about “winning” or “proving our point.” It is about seeking resolution with a heart that desires reconciliation, humility, and Christlike love. By doing so, we transform conflict into a deeper connection, not just with others but also with God.
