Healing Begins with Honesty
When we are brokenhearted or overwhelmed by the storms of life, the first step toward healing is honesty. It’s easy to hide our pain, put on a mask, and pretend everything is okay. But true healing begins when we acknowledge our feelings before God, bringing our struggles into the light of His presence.
Psalm 34:18 (ESV) – “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 42:11 (ESV) – “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”
Psalm 34:18 assures us that God is near to the brokenhearted. He doesn’t turn away from us when we are hurting or crushed in spirit. In fact, He is closest to us in our moments of weakness and vulnerability. Our honesty before God doesn’t drive Him away—it draws Him near. God is not afraid of our emotions, whether they be sadness, anger, or fear. He welcomes us to come as we are, trusting that He is ready to heal, restore, and comfort.
Psalm 42:11 gives us a glimpse into the psalmist’s own emotional struggle. He openly questions his feelings—”Why are you cast down, O my soul?”—and acknowledges the turmoil within. Yet, in the midst of his despair, he speaks truth to his soul: “Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”
The psalmist doesn’t deny his pain, but he chooses to place his hope in God, knowing that His faithfulness will bring restoration. This honest wrestling with emotions is part of the healing process.
When we bring our honest feelings to God, we allow Him to work in our hearts. We open ourselves to His peace, which surpasses understanding. It’s in these vulnerable moments that we experience His healing touch, as He speaks hope into our brokenness and restores our soul.
Prayer:
Lord, I come before You today with my honest feelings—whether joy, sorrow, fear, or frustration. I acknowledge that I am broken and in need of Your healing. Please draw near to me, as You promise, and help me to hope in You, even in my pain. Renew my spirit and restore my soul. I trust that You are my salvation and my strength. Amen.
