“Counseling through the Word” Devotional: Pursue Peace
Scripture: Matthew 5:9 (ESV) – “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”
In a world filled with conflict and division, Jesus calls us to be peacemakers. This is not just a call to end disputes but a deeper invitation to promote God’s peace—His shalom—in every aspect of life. Shalom encompasses total well-being, both personally and within the community. As children of God, we are to reflect His character by pursuing peace in our relationships, our communities, and even within ourselves.
Devotional Thought
Being a peacemaker is about more than just avoiding conflict or keeping the peace. It’s about actively working to restore harmony where there is strife and being a beacon of God’s peace in a broken world. Jesus Himself is the ultimate peacemaker, having reconciled us to God through His sacrificial death. Now, He calls us to carry on that work by promoting peace wherever we go.
This is not always easy. It may require humility, patience, and a willingness to forgive. It may mean stepping into uncomfortable situations to bring about reconciliation. But as you do this, you reflect the heart of God, who desires peace and unity for all His children.
As you strive to be a peacemaker, remember that true peace comes from God. It’s not something we can manufacture on our own. Instead, we rely on the Holy Spirit to work through us, bringing God’s peace into our hearts and extending it to those around us.
Bringing it Home: Applying What We Learned
- Seek Reconciliation: Is there someone you need to make peace with? Ask God for the courage and wisdom to pursue reconciliation.
- Be a Conduit of Peace: Look for opportunities to promote peace in your relationships and community. How can you be a calming presence in tense situations?
- Reflect God’s Peace: As you go about your day, let the peace of Christ rule in your heart, guiding your words and actions.
Prayer
Lord, help me to be a peacemaker, reflecting Your love and peace to those around me. Give me the strength and wisdom to promote peace in my relationships and community, and may Your peace reign in my heart. Amen.
Questions for Reflection
Reflecting on today’s message, consider how you can be a peacemaker in your own life. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
- Is there someone I need to reconcile with?
- How can I be a calming presence in my community?
- Am I allowing the peace of Christ to rule in my heart and guide my actions?
This week, challenge yourself to actively pursue peace in your relationships and community. Seek reconciliation where needed, be a conduit of peace, and let God’s peace guide your actions. By doing so, you will reflect the heart of God and promote his shalom in a world that desperately needs it.
